Trained as an architect and developer, De Jonge studied at the Delft University of Technology and has been instrumental in shaping Heijmans mission to create buildings that are, ‘Healthy Living Environments.’ In his role as Director of Sustainability at Heijmans, De Jonge’s focus is on making strategic decisions that help to make smarter and more sustainable buildings that have a positive impact on people and the planet. Harwil de Jonge recently joined the new Board of Advisory of NL Greenlabel, a company with the aim of restoring and promoting biodiversity. 

She was a tenure-track professor at MIT from 2004 to 2010, was Dean of ENAC at EPFL from 2013 to 2018, is Academic Director of the Smart Living Lab and co-founder of the consulting startup OCULIGHT dynamics. She was Visiting Professor at SUTD in Singapore in 2019. Author of over 200 refereed scientific papers with several distinctions, she was the inaugural laureate of the global Daylight Research Award in 2016 and led the winning Swiss team for the US Solar Decathlon 2017 competition

Working on projects in the US, Italy, France, and Denmark, her architecture practice focuses on residential renovation, helping homeowners balance affordability, sustainability, and cultural heritage conservation. As a researcher and strategist, she has collaborated with creative companies such as 3XN/GXN, SPACE10 and Danske BoligArkitekter on projects ranging from organizational innovation to the effects of IoT on inhabitant well-being.

Her master's thesis "Full Circle Renovations" responding to the New European Bauhaus initiative cumulated in the Grundejernes Investeringsfond funded webinar, "Sustainability in Residential Renovation," bringing together architects, researchers and homeowners from over 30 countries to provide input and feedback on the project.

For the past five years, she has worked at NREP with a focus on creating sustainable and healthy cities. She is working on a lasting, positive impact on humanity and the planet. She believes in cross-stakeholder collaborations also when it comes to public-private partnerships. She is driven by ensuring better communities that increase the value of life and ensure physical and mental health for everyone in the cities.
